Catherine A. (Ferney) Green, age 91, died Saturday, March 16, 2024, at the Whitinsville Retirement Home. She leaves a son, Paul G. Green, of Florida; 5 daughters: Judie DeLutis, also of Florida; Peggy Kohn and her husband Larry, of Sutton; Nancy Batson and her husband Bill, of Douglas; Katie Murphy, and her husband Kirk, of Douglas; and Carrie Conner and her husband Jeff, of Northborough; 3 brothers: John Ferney and his wife Gail, of Quechee, VT; Jim Ferney and his wife Mary, of Lansdowne, VA; and Bill Ferney and his wife Joyce, of Falmouth, MA; a sister-in-law Pat Ferney, of Plainville, MA; 14 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Catherine was predeceased by her husband, James F. Green in 2012, a son, Jeff Green, in 1997, a brother, Joseph P. Ferney, and a granddaughter, Christine Craveiro.
Born May 26, 1932, in Lynchburg, Virginia, Cathy was the only daughter of Francis X. and Catherine M. (Heavill) Ferney. At a young age her family moved to Walpole where she graduated from Walpole High School and then Regis College, with a degree in education. It was while volunteering for the VA in Roxbury that Catherine met her husband, James. After marrying, they lived in Walpole, Norfolk and Plainville. When they both retired, they purchased a home in Fort Pierce, FL, where they moved permanently. In 2018, Cathy moved back to Massachusetts to be closer to family.
Before staying home to raise her family, Cathy taught high school English. Later she returned to work for 25 years as an administrative assistant at Plainville Elementary School. While her children were young, she coached softball for many years, enjoyed camping with the family, and was very active at Saint Martha Catholic Church in Plainville. She was always enjoyed socializing with girlfriends, whether playing bridge, Mah Jong, or going out to eat. Wherever Catherine lived, she was always involved with church and was a long-time member of the Focolare movement.
Cathy's Funeral Mass will be Monday, March 25, 2024, at 11:00AM at Saint Patrick's Church, Cross St, Whitinsville, MA. Burial in South Florida National Cemetery will be Thursday, April 4, 2024, at 1:30PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Saint Jude Childrens' Reseach Hospital.
