Northbridge- Roger I. Mathieu, 81, died Wednesday, January 23, 2019, at the Pax Villa Hospice in McAllen, Texas. He leaves his wife of 58 years, Denise G. (Messier) Mathieu, in addition his three sons: Steve Mathieu and his wife Heidi, of Sparta, TN and their children Cody and Chelsea; Ronald Mathieu and Kristen Parker, of Webster, and his children Nicholas, Emily and Isabelle; Eric Mathieu and his wife Jennifer, of Douglas, and their children Jacob, Madison and Reece; his two daughters: Linda Mathieu-Vera, and her husband Homer, of Northbridge, and children Travis, Rachel and Matthew; and Kelly Mathieu and her husband Bradley Brigham, Jr., of Nothbridge; two sisters: Gloria Pelletier and her husband Regent, of Grafton and Rosie Cote, and her husband Jacques, of La Tuque, Quebec; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Mathieu is predeceased by his daughter, Vicky Mathieu, and his brother, Richard Mathieu.
Born and raised in Woonsocket, RI, he was born September 10, 1937, a son of Walter and Tharsille (Michaud) Mathieu. Upon graduation from Woonsocket High School in 1956, he enlisted in the Marine Corps. In 1968 he began his long time career as owner and operator of his trucking company Mathieu and Sons. He was active in Northbridge Town Politics, serving on the Planning Board from 1984-1990 and the Board of Selectmen from 1990-1999.
Roger and Denise were "Winter Texans", spending the past 15 winters in the Rio Grande Valley. Together they traveled extensively throughout Europe, the United States and Canada. He enjoyed Cajun music and was known as a great dancer and light on his feet. A very family oriented man, he loved to have a good time and enjoyed conversation. He was a 3rd Degree Knight with the Mumford Council #385 and long time member of Saint Peter's Church.
Calling Hours are Friday, February 1, from 4-7PM. Mr. Mathieu's Funeral Mass will be at 11AM, Saturday, February 2, in Saint Peter's Church. Burial will follow in Saint Patrick's Cemetery.
