Arthur R. Courtman, 80, died Sunday, October 30, in the UMass Memorial Medical Center, after a period of declining health. He is survived by three daughters; Dr. Jessica Emery, of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; Ashley Whitehouse, of Hingham, and Hilary Ross of Northbrook, IL; eight grandchildren, Madison, Tanner, Morgan, Hayden, Paige, Parker, Kinsley, and Blake; and his former wife, Dr, J.R. (Joan) Courtman, of Bourne. He also leaves his brother, John Courtemanche, of Whitinsville, and his sister, Joan Raymond, of Avon Lake, OH.
Arthur was born in Whitinsville, June 13, 1942, a son of Michael and Helen (Fitzpatrick) Courtemanche, and lived here most of his life. He also lived in Sutton for 20 years. He was a graduate of Northbridge High School and the University of Bridgeport, and he taught social studies at Nipmuc Regional High School more than 25 years, retiring in 2005.
A man of many interests, Arthur was a world traveler whose adventures took him to many exotic places, including Tanzania, where he successfully climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, at the age of 72. When not traveling, Arthur could often be found at the beach, hiking, walking, listening to music, reading, cooking, or visiting his grandchildren, whom he adored and talked about constantly.
At his request, Arthur will not have Calling Hours or a Funeral Service. The Carr Funeral Home is privileged to be assisting his family at this difficult time.
