South Grafton—Diamantina (Chong-Bernal) Sleeper, age 98, died Friday, November 24, 2023, while surrounded by her loving family. One of 10 children born to Jose Chong and Maria Bernal-Loren, she was born July 7, 1925, in Limon de Colon, Panama.
Diamantina leaves a son David Ross Bahrs and his wife Lorraine, of Camden, NY; two daughters: Ruth Forman and her husband Lance, of South Grafton; and Susan Bristol and her husband David, of Parish, NY: five grandchildren: Edward Bristol, Jenifer Lewis, Jaqueline Bristol, Davita Forman-Salazar, and Jared Forman; and six great grandchildren: Jason, Justin, Jada, Appolonia, Amelia, and Miles. She was predeceased by her husband Donald M. Sleeper in 1999 and her first husband David L. Bahrs, in 2018.
Diamantina lived a long and full life in many places. While living in California for a time she attended Modesto Jr. College and later finished a degree in Social Work at Elizabeth City College. Later, living in upstate New York where she raised her family with her first husband, they worked for many years on the family pig farm. While married to Donald, they lived together in Marlboro for 12 years. After he died, she returned to New York state, living part of the year with her daughter Susan and the other part with Ruth. At the age of 80, she purchased a home in Panama and began living there for half the year and spending the other half with her daughters.
A quiet, humble woman, Diamantina was known by her friends to be extremely funny. She loved cosmetology, receiving her degree from Elizabeth Grady in Boston. She was always “made up” and well dressed. She loved travel, horticulture and being outside. She was a hard worker.
Diamantina became one of Jehovah’s Witnesses at the age of 92. She loved to preach and attend Bible studies. A Memorial Talk will be held Saturday, December 2, 2023, at 1PM at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 120 Plain St., Hopedale, MA.
