Francis C. Toto, 90, took his final voyage on Sunday, June 27, at home, in the company of his family. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Lillian (Hunter) Toto. Frank was a proud father to sons Christopher (dec. 2006), Wallace and Vincent, and to daughter, Eileen Pinoos, whose husband, Neil, became a fourth son to him. He is also survived by his sister, Dominica Gail O'Connell, and ten grandchildren.
Mr.Toto was born in Brooklyn, NY, February 22. 1931, to Crescenzio and Angelina (Fazio) Toto, the 6th of their seven children. He spent his youth in Brooklyn, and much adulthood in Red Bank, NJ, where he raised his family. Following his secondary education at Christian Brothers Academy in Brooklyn, Frank earned his degree in Marine Engineering from the distinguished United States Merchant Marine Academy, King's Point. While serving in the U.S. Merchant Marines and Naval Reserve, Frank attained the rank of Lieutenant JG, USNR, and Chief Engineer of unlimited tonnage merchant vessels. Within a year of graduating from the USMMA, Frank survived a devastating tanker explosion upon the USS Salem Maritime, overcoming great odds to continue a career that included several years as an ABS engineer, and a multi-decade tenure with Texaco/Chevron until retirement.
Frank will be remembered for his passion for life, and, above all, family. While he explored multiple pastimes from canoeing to singing, his main focus was always to nurture and serve his people, la famiglia.
