George D. (Jr.) Avakian Obituary
George D. Avakian, Jr., 82, died Thursday, April 24, 2025, at the UMASS Medical Center, Lake Avenue Campus, after a period of declining health. George leaves a brother Peter Avakian and his wife Shiela, of Largo, FL; three sisters: Katherine Shea, of Worcester; Pamela Campo and her husband Gary, of Northbridge;and Patricia Ebbeling and her husband David, of Charlton; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 50 years, Ann (Sohigian) Avakian, in 2019.
George was born in Whitinsville, September 7, 1942, a son of George D. and Margaret (Kachajian) Avakian, Sr. He played clarinet with the marching band and was a member of the Northbridge High School class of 1960. After graduation, George enlisted in the United States Navy, during which time he traveled to many places including Japan and Guantanamo Bay. He was a member of the Armenian Church of Our Savior, in Worcester where he served as a Deacon, played the organ and shared his beautiful singing voice with the congregation.
A man with many friends, George was known for being personable and big hearted and was always a gentleman. He and his wife enjoyed going to the casinos.
A Calling Hour will be Friday, May 2, 2025, at the Carr Funeral Home, 24 Hill St., Whitinsville, from 9:00-10:00AM. George's Funeral Service will follow at 10:30 in Soorp Asdvadzadzin Armenian Apostolic Church. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery, 119 Webster St., Worcester. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Soorp Asdvadzadzin Armenian Apostolic Church, 315 Church St., Whitinsville, MA 01588, or to the American Heart Association, PO Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284-0692.
