Northbridge--Jean (Spratt) Granger, 83, died Friday, June 18, 2021, in the care of the dedicated hospice staff at Milford Regional Medical Center.
A 1955 graduate of Northbridge High School, Jean worked as a registered nurse her entire career after graduating from the Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1958. She worked as a psychiatric nurse at Massachusetts Mental Health Center in Boston, substance abuse nurse at Gray Rock in Uxbridge, IV therapy nurse at Milford Regional Medical Center and Memorial Hospital in Worcester, and finished her career in the Deaf Unit at Westborough State Hospital until her retirement at age 72. She loved this last assignment and made lifelong friends with her co-workers as she learned about Deaf culture and practiced American Sign Language.
Among her many pursuits, Jean enjoyed watching birds and wildlife from her back deck, planning and taking family vacations in New Hampshire’s White Mountains, trying her luck at the New England casinos she traveled to with her beloved husband Bobby, volunteering as a conversation partner with people learning English as a second language, knitting and crocheting baby blankets any time she learned of a friend having a child, and visits from family and friends, especially at Thanksgiving and Christmas. An enthusiastic texter, Jean also enjoyed Facebook as a way to stay in touch with distant friends and former co-workers.
The daughter of William A. Spratt and Jennie Cooper Spratt, Jean was predeceased by her husband Robert M. Granger on September 23, 2009, and her brothers William, James, and Archie Spratt. She is survived by her three children, Michael Granger and his wife Susan Granger of Worcester, Steven Granger and his partner Tami Hanson Newell of Uxbridge, Karen Granger and her husband Jon Seamans of Hyde Park, and the grandchildren she was so proud of, Christopher Granger and Kathryn Granger of Worcester. She also leaves nephews and nieces including Sandra Lowther of Whitinsville with whom she shared a special bond, her dear friends Ruth Lamoureux and Maggie Rotti, and her grand-dog Derek who loved his visits to Grammy.
Calling hours will be Friday, June 25, 2021, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Carr Funeral Home, Whitinsville, where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 26, 2021, with burial to follow at Pine Grove Cemetery, Whitinsville.
