Margaret Ann (MacGregor) Sawyer Obituary

KENNEBUNK – Margaret Ann (Peg) Sawyer (MacGregor), 84, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2026. Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, on July 10, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Lyndhurst and Marian Littlefield MacGregor.

Margaret grew up in Upton, Massachusetts, and graduated from Northbridge High School. She went on to earn her Bachelor of Arts from Bates College.

Peg worked as a teacher for a few years and soon met and married her husband Joseph Nichols Sawyer (Nick to her).  She soon turned her focus to raising 5 children with her husband Nick in Hopkinton MA, Amherst NH, and Laconia NH.  In 1983 The family moved to Kennebunk, ME where they purchased and ran The Idlease Guest Resort.  After selling the Idlease, Peg was employed by the Nonantum Condos in Kennebunk, and the Southern Maine Planning Commission until she retired in 2014.  Even though retired she kept several pro bono bookkeeping duties for organizations she supported.  She stayed in her home in Kennebunk for the rest of her life broken up by travel all over the world with her close friends.

Peg was a long-time active congregant and board member at the Sanford Unitarian Universalist Church, and a dedicated official with Maine Swimming.  She never shied away from helping those who asked, or that she observed as needing it.

As was her way, the relationships that she shared with her children and grandchildren were as varied as the nicknames she was given.  A call to Gramma, Grammy, Mom or Peg would be answered by an open ear and an encouraging voice.

Peg lived life on her own terms.  She loved raising flowers and vegetables in her garden, sharing puzzles online, reading and sewing.  Her loving family was spread all over the country.  For those local, her home was the place for Christmas every year. She welcomed visitors in summer for family vacations at the beach. The kitchen was always stocked with home-baked cookies and comfort food for dinner, and ice cream for dessert.

She was predeceased by her husband of 31 years.

She is survived by her five children: Thomas Sawyer and his wife Suzanne; Rebecca Sawyer; Laura Mahon; Ralph Sawyer and his wife Marci Donaldson; and Rachel Sawyer and her husband Jason Tetrault. She also leaves behind nine cherished grandchildren: Devorah (Anna), Shayna (James), Donovan, Shira, Jocelyn, Isaac, Jayden (Andrew), Finnley, and Ethan.

A memorial service will be held 2 PM Saturday, April 18, 2026 at Sanford Unitarian Universalist Church, 5 Lebanon St. Sanford. Later Interment will take place in Hopedale Cemetery in Hopedale, Massachusetts.
